I am a qualified psychotherapist offering therapy and counselling (for the time being) to anywhere with an internet connection. When we return to post pandemic 'normal' I will be in Hanwell, London Borough of Ealing, West London. 5 minutes walk from Hanwell and Drayton Green stations and easily accessible from Paddington, Ealing Broadway, Southall and Greenford.
I have been working in Ealing as a counsellor and psychotherapist with adults and young people for the last 35 years. As part of my practice I supervise and teach counsellors. Through my experience of working in private practice, Hounslow Youth Counselling Service, schools, prisons and a GP surgery I have experience of a range of concerns, including; relationship difficulties, anxiety, stress, depression, loss and bereavement, low self-esteem, childhood issues, feelings of isolation, little meaning or direction in life.
Confidentiality is most important in counselling and psychotherapy and I offer a safe environment where you can feel it is possible to work on any difficulties and concerns you wish to talk about.
As a UKCP registered psychotherapist I ensure that I get supervision and support from colleagues for my work so that you can feel confident in our work together.
What is Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Our brains and minds are incredibly powerful at solving personal-social problems but sometimes a situation may develop that inhibits us from moving forward.
Often this can be resolved by talking to family and friends.
When this doesn't seem to help enough then a therapist can work with you to free up your own resources to understand the situation and get what you want.
By creating a warm professional environment where you feel safe to explore your life with confidence and trust the therapist facilitates change within you.
Research shows that people want to feel free:
Counselling and psychotherapy work through both the helping relationship and therapeutic techniques. Counselling and psychotherapy are not, for the most part, designed to cure an illness as an antibiotic might cure a bacterial infection.
Counselling aims to help you to change how you see the world - how much you are aware of your feelings; your behaviours and your thoughts and how you can move to change unhelpful patterns. With this in mind counselling and psychotherapy should help most psychological problems. For some conditions such as depression or psychiatric illness it will be important to work with your GP as well.
Generally people feel better fairly quickly after seeing a counsellor. The fact that you have made an effort towards self help and begun to work on your problem will improve your sense of self effectiveness. The counsellor's support and the idea that you are now working in a 'team' can also be beneficial. To find out more Visit the British Association for Counselling and UK Council for Psychotherapy.
I am a qualified UKCP registered psychotherapist (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) trained at the Metanoia Institute. I have a degree in psychology, an MSc in Intelligent Systems, an MSc in Psychotherapy, a diploma in hypnotherapy and solution focussed therapy and a certificate and diploma in supervision. Along with these qualifications I have been working with adults and young people for the last 30 years as a counsellor and psychotherapist.
In addition I have managed a counselling service for young people: selecting, training, supervising and supporting counsellors. I was a graduate member of the British Psychological Society and the Division of Counselling Psychology. I have also taught counselling at Birkbeck College (London University), West Thames College, Brunel University and Metanoia Institute.
I have been supervising counsellors and youth workers for the last 20 years. I have trained with Robin Shohet and Joan Wilmot at the Centre for Supervision and Team Development and with London Centre for Psychodrama in supervision.
Each person is different and it is important to feel comfortable with your counsellor so that you can work through whatever might be troubling you. My integrative approach aims to meet the varying needs of my clients.
I work individually with clients who bring a range of issues including:
Issues around sexuality
Self esteem issues
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
It is important to feel comfortable with your therapist. Sometimes it can be helpful to talk with a couple of therapists and discuss their approach. Usually the first meeting lets you know if we can work together.
A difficult question to answer as the subject is vast. The book 'Counselling for Toads' (see my resource section) tries to answer this question with a story about Toad, of Wind in the Willows fame, who goes for counselling. Great for all ages.
This is difficult to say without meeting but my aim is to see you for as few sessions as is needed. For some crises there can be relief in a few sessions with talking it through; identifying the issues and taking some action. Symptoms can be relieved just by feeling understood. For problems and difficulties that have been part of your life for a while it is likely that more work will be needed. It is important for us to identify what kind of work you want to do with me and how long this might take. We can review progress at regular times to see where we are up to.
I am in Shakespeare Road, Hanwell, London W7. Please see the map below - showing Hanwell mainline station (Paddington to Heathrow/Reading line) and Drayton Green mainline station (West Ealing to Greenford line) Each are about 5 minutes walk. E1 and E3 bus routes are also close.
Yes - I have been supervising, training and managing counsellors for 30 years. I trained in supervision with the Centre for Supervision and Team Development and London Centre for Psychodrama. I have co-authored a paper in Youth & Policy, National Youth Agency, on supervision of trainee Youth Workers.
If I do not have any suitable times for you or you would prefer to see a female therapist then you may want to contact these therapists. I work with them and I am happy to recommend them to you:
